Why This Designer Writes

Monday, July 18, 2016

Creativity has always been a part of my life. Some of my earliest memories are of drawing and mark making and it’s been a life long passion that ultimately turned into my profession as a designer. The recent addition of writing about all things creative has been a natural and organic extension of my love for what I do.

Don’t get me wrong, my practical design work will always come first and I’ve never intentionally started any of my blogs. Instead, most have been the outcome of thoughts that I have quickly scribbled into my little ideas book that I carry everywhere with me or typed into a word document and the notes app on my cell phone. This note making builds up and eventually it turns into something.

Recently the writing seems to have developed and I’ve found that it’s giving me a lot more substance to my commercial design work. It’s helped me to learn, research and read about my industry and forces me to ask ‘why’ a lot more. It’s made me more vocal. I love what I do, but the writing and reading seems to add another dimension. And better still, I get to meet and interact with interesting like-minded people. In short, I feel my writing is making me a better designer!

Along with my job as a creative director, I also enjoy playing a role within the design community. I’m an active member of the AIGA and for the past three years have also been selected as a mentor (and recently a pre selection judge) for the International Council of Design (ico-D) and Adobe Design Achievement Awards. I began to make notes and write articles based on some of the questions and experiences that I had received and without trying, once again, something started to form. I began to create a place where like-minded designers would be able to come together and help each other out with advice and support. It’s how this blog you’re reading; ‘Design Good Design’ began.

I now write this blog, not out of knowing, but from a want to understand. I have found great value in connecting with others throughout the world who share a similar passion for design, from exchanging stories and experiences, learning from leading industry figures, to offering advice and support to young designers just beginning in their career.

Ultimately, I have found myself incredibly inspired from the response that I have received.
